Summary of “Cell Phone Exposure May Protect Against and Reverse Alzheimer's Disease” from ScienceDaily (Jan. 7, 2010). http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/01/100106193217.htm
This article deals with a theory which I have heard or read about being possible for a number of years now but reports on the first solid experimenting to be done on the theory: can prolonged exposure to electromagnetic waves from cell phones help protect against Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The articles reports the findings of experiments carried out in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centre at the University of South Florida (ADRC; USF). The USF scientists used 96 mice, some perfectly healthy and others with varying degrees of memory loss, and exposed them to levels of radiation similar to a human having a cell phone pressed to their ear for 1 hour sessions, twice a day, for several months. This was to recreate the equivalent exposure of a lifetime use of a cell phone by a human. The scientists set up an antenna which emitted the radiation and housed the mice in boxes equally apart from the antenna. Across the board the scientists found that the radiation dissipated the beta-amyloid which causes the memory loss. In young healthy mice, if the radiation was absorbed during young adulthood and onwards, it prevented the eventual development of Alzheimer’s and actually increased brain function to above normal levels. In the mice already affected by memory loss, they observed a return to normal brain function and memory recollection. From the first time I heard of this theory I’ve been very interested to find out if it is true. The benefits of these discoveries are huge as by doing something as simple and emotionally rewarding as keeping in touch via cell phones, we would be providing ourselves with an effective, non-invasive and drug-free way to prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease.
A bit wordy but if you missed anything in Olivia's referencing class this could come in handy --
